A musician like Fionn Ó Lochlainn is of a rare breed in these times. In fact, Fionn is a real musician reaching above and beyond the din of the Tavistock fashioned mind-rape, clap-trap garbage "music" and culpable spotlight moths that has plagued the music scene since the early to mid 90's; where the "music" industry sifted out any one who was saying something of importance; and where groups like Metallica
went from singing "And Justice for All..." to enticing people to go to sleep and "Enter [the dream world of the] Sandman."
"Spawn of the Beast" is an album for our times and for the people who can still feel and think for themselves. It is an album that can touch your heart because it is written from the same depth in which it reaches. With beautiful arrangements and instrumentation, "Spawn of the Beast" is a soulfully written and performed gift of music to the world.
With songs like "Racing Against the Time," Fionn asks the question "are we taking the long way 'round?" and letting each other down while "too many people..." are going through the diseased, robotic, and reactive motions of this new millennium.
"Green of the Grass" is an ode to the beauty of nature, the acceptance of death and an address to one who is bogged down with superficial attachments; an uplifting and healing piece.
In "Blues for America" a lament is sung about how America has turned from the "land of the 'free' into the home of the slave," creatively using a melodic quote from the "National Anthem" that is sung over the backdrop of a lone tenor guitar.
"Spawn of the Beast" spans 15 songs in total, including 3 cover songs: an eerie rendition of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" sung over the droning of uilleann pipes and 2 Frank Zappa covers,
"I'm the Slime" and "Dumb All Over" which are performed with such fresh creative arrangements that you would think they were his own.
To categorize Fionn's style of writing is a hard task to accomplish and always a sign of one who has made music into an art form as it was intended to be. There is no category needed here, no labels or identities when it comes straight from the heart and you can feel the vibrations of the strings and his vocal cords resonating with your own.
